      Ruby

      Lab Grown Ruby

The same passionate fire as nature’s ruby — grown responsibly with science and care, carrying the ancient magic of luck and love.

“A ruby born from fire and patience — chemically identical to nature’s own, yet kinder to our Earth.”

The History of Lab Grown Ruby

The quest to create ruby in the laboratory dates back to the 19th century. In 1837, French chemist Marc Antoine Gaudin produced the first microscopic synthetic ruby crystals. By the late 1880s, Auguste Verneuil perfected the flame fusion method — the first commercially successful way to grow synthetic rubies.

A major milestone came in 1958 when American gemologist Carroll Chatham successfully grew the first laboratory ruby using the flux growth method. Chatham’s pioneering work, refined over decades, allowed rubies to be grown slowly in a controlled environment that mimics conditions deep within the Earth.

Today, modern techniques such as Verneuil Flame Fusion, Czochralski Pulling, and advanced Flux Growth enable us to create rubies with exceptional color, clarity, and consistency — without the environmental impact of traditional mining.

      What is Lab Grown Ruby?

Lab Grown Ruby is a genuine ruby created in a controlled laboratory. It has the exact same chemical composition (Al₂O₃ + chromium) and physical properties as natural ruby, including a Mohs hardness of 9. The primary difference is origin: lab rubies grow in weeks to months rather than millions of years.

      Advanced Growth Methods We Use

      • Verneuil Flame Fusion — Powdered aluminum oxide mixed with chromium is melted at over 2000°C and crystallized drop by drop.
      • Czochralski Pulling Method — A seed crystal is slowly pulled from molten material, producing large, high-quality crystals with excellent clarity.
      • Flux Growth Method — Inspired by Chatham’s pioneering technique, crystals grow slowly in a molten flux solution, resulting in vibrant “pigeon’s blood” red color and fewer inclusions.

      The Lucky Meaning of Ruby

Since ancient times, ruby has been known as the “King of Gems” (from the Sanskrit *ratnaraj*). Its intense blood-red color has long symbolized **passion, courage, vitality, and protection**.

In many cultures, ruby is believed to bring good fortune, success, and true love. It was thought to protect the wearer from misfortune and illness, and to ignite the fire of life and romance. In the Bible, wisdom is described as “more precious than rubies.”

At Lucky Gemstones, we see Lab Ruby as a modern carrier of this ancient magic — a stone of **passionate yet gentle love**, growth, and harmony. Just like the unique patterns in our moss agate, each Lab Ruby tells its own story of strength and enduring beauty.
